100 New Images
Today, 21 December 2005, I have uploaded around 100 new images into the Banknote Catalogue section (mostly pre-decimal)plus a few Trading Banknote images (all kindly supplied by members). Please spend some time checking the catalogue and gallery sections out. Also please contribute any images that are not already displayed. Between us we should be able to show representative images of all the pre-decimal series and this will make it easier for us to spot any prefix varieties etc.

Banknotes Dated 2005
The Reserve Bank have informed me that they do not expect there to be sufficient need for them to issue any banknotes dated 2005 (05) over the festive season as expected by those of us whom have an interest in such things.

But hopefully our new Zealand members will keep an eye out for them when they finally start trickling into circulation at some time in the future.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has announced that it will be stockpiling banknotes in case of emergency, thus we can expect some large print runs in the very near future. All the details are on there website at:

http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/crisismgmt/2184033.html

It will be interesting to see if they stockpile a bunch of notes and issue any new ones or if they will issue them in order and we end up a few years behind in the print runs being issued.

From a collectors point of view this may not be very good for us as we may have to wait a year or two to get our hands on 'new date' issues.

Access Block
Unfortunately I have taken the decision to block access for one of our members due to the continued use of this site to make unpleasant comments about people involved in our hobby and also for using this site to make poitical comments.

I have not done this lightly but to be honest I have better things to do with my life than play policeman on this site.

It is about our hobby of collecting New Zealand banknotes (and to a lesser extent, NZ coins and world banknotes and numismatic items of INTEREST.

Reserve Bank of New Zealand
The Reserve Bank announced today that it has selected the Royal Canadian Mint to mint New Zealand's new low-value coins.

"After a rigorous tender process the Bank is confident that the Royal Canadian Mint will be able to manufacture high quality coins for New Zealand," commented Brian Lang, Reserve Bank Currency Manager.

"The Canadian Mint impressed the Bank with their quality of coins, in particular their durability and their electromagnetic signature, which is important for the vending industry. The Mint has an excellent reputation and extensive experience in making plated steel coins for Canada."

On 31 March 2005, the Reserve Bank announced its decision to modernise New Zealand's silver coloured coins. The decisions are to make the current 50, 20, 10 cents coins smaller and of lighter, lower cost plated-steel, and to remove the 5 cent coin from circulation. The $1 and $2 coins will be retained, as will the existing images on the 50, 20 and 10 cent coins, including that of the Queen.

"The changes to New Zealand's silver coins will give New Zealand a coherent and logical set of coins that will be more convenient for the public, easier for those handling coin in bulk, such as banks and security firms, and less costly to manufacture, saving the taxpayer approximately $2 million annually," commented Brian Lang.

"These are important changes that will affect everyone in New Zealand. They will bring major benefits to the users of coins - the general public - as well as businesses involved in handling cash and their staff."

The Reserve Bank plans to issue the new coins in July 2006. The Reserve Bank is working closely with banks, security companies, vending machine suppliers, retailers and community groups to ensure a smooth transition.

TWO auctions are coming up
TWO auctions are coming up for banknote collectors that we would be interested in. CLICK on the "More News" button to the right to read the rest of this news update.

The first is run by Colonial Auctions Australia, Brisbane (in conjunction with Peter & Margaret Eccles) and contains a large amount of New Zealand banknotes and tokens. Following is an extract from an email sent to me by Peter Eccles.

Catalogues can be obtained from Colonial (for Aussies) and from us (Kiwis).

They can email me on eccles.coins@xtra.co.nz Also I will be offering a full bidding service. This should appeal particularly to New Zealand bidders as I should be able to process their credit cards within NZ to avoid the 2% surcharge which credit card companies charge on overseas transactions.

The catalogue can also be seen online atwww.colonialauctionsaustralia.com

The second auction is Nobles regular July auction in Melbourne. There are a few high quality New Zealand Lefeaux notes to tempt any of you whom can afford such great notes. Not me sadly

Catalogue can be seen atwww.noble.net.au

Happy bidding!!
